What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

Withdrawal from substances can be a challenging journey. As part of your treatment plan, we may prescribe medication to help ease the discomfort and side effects of detoxification. Since Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is not suitable for everyone, guests and doctors will collaboratively decide the best course of action on an individual basis. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, MAT increases the chances of remaining in treatment, thereby lowering the risk of overdose mortality.

We offer the following medications:

  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone)
  • Extended-Release Buprenorphine (Sublocade)
  • Naloxone (Narcan)
  • Vivitrol

Alleviating Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal from substance use disorder often comes with various side effects that can last for a few days. Anxiety and depression are common and can significantly impact daily life and recovery. To prevent distress that might hinder your progress, we may use medication-assisted treatment to manage these symptoms. Other frequent withdrawal symptoms include flu-like symptoms, hallucinations, seizures, changes in sleep patterns, extreme mood swings, and appetite changes.

Integrating MAT with Therapy

Addiction is a psychological disorder, making it essential for our clinics to address behavioral, social, and personal issues through psychotherapy. Medication can help suppress cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting an illicit substance, while psychotherapy helps you understand the underlying causes of your substance abuse, recognize and avoid triggers, and build a sober lifestyle. The combination of these treatments can support you in achieving long-lasting sobriety.

Some of the therapy modalities we use include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
